A festive drink to light up the darkness of winter
2 oranges
20 whole cloves
2-750ml bottles Sherry or Madeira
4 cups apple cider
4 cinnamon sticks
1/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup granulated white sugar
soft brown sugar to taste
Stick cloves into oranges to create a studded design. In a large saucepan, combine 2 bottles sherry or Madeira, apple cider, 4 cinnamon sticks, sugar, raisins, and clove-studded oranges. Bring to a simmer (do not boil) and steep over low flame for 30 minutes. Add brown sugar to taste. Pour into decorative bowl or serve from the stovetop.
